Another important line of SLAB’s inquiry is the development of representational systems that incorporate the human experience of sidewalk space. While the celestial plan view has long been critiqued as de-humanizing and a construct of political power, we also find that elevation, perspective, axionometric, and section views are insufficient. Furthermore, current digital technology has a way of further flattening the representation of sidewalk phenomena.  One strategy we are exploring is the layering in of real media with photography and digital cartographic lines. We hope to find ways to recover the human scale interactions and corporeal and sensorial experience of sidewalk space as an important part of the intersection of space and society.
