Exhibit Prospectus

Sidewalks are perhaps the city’s most important and most overlooked public space. Ubiquitous, narrow, and networked, sidewalks have the potential to bring people together into a humane and civic society.

Sidewalk City presents a path-breaking array of visual, tactile, and animated maps to unveil a wider public of everyday urban people and their spatial practices. Based on 15 years of fieldwork and research in Ho Chi Minh City, this exhibit presents Vietnam ‘s remarkable sidewalk system to expand our understanding of the possible flexibility of urban space. The traveling exhibit will be accompanied by the publication of a book by University of Chicago Press which further elaborates the possibilities of using critical cartography for analysis and public engagement.
